When Cate opened her eyes it was still dark, only a sliver of light filtering through the window. In sleep, Deacon’s breaths came out heavy, like this was the first time he’d slept in ages. She couldn’t go back to sleep, not even if she wanted to.

Pushing the covers away from her body, Cate got up from the bed and put on her clothes before heading to begin her work. This is why she’d come here, not to stay naked in bed with a stranger, even though she already missed his warmth. She picked up the tape player and rewound it, then pressed play. Her day would need to be focused on this, especially since it involved things she’d never dealt with before. There was a first for everything.

As she listened intently, Cate kept the volume low and held it up beside her ear, careful not to disturb Deacon. For a long while, there was nothing, until static flickered. She brought the player as close to her ear as she could, paying close attention as the static formed words.

“Cate, I love you.” Her eyes opened wide and she yanked the recorder away from her ear. Not because they were words of a ghost, but because she recognized the voice. Her gaze focused on a still-sleeping Deacon.

It wasn’t his words that scared her, but because of the emotion swelling in her chest—she loved him, too. But she couldn’t, not after just meeting him, not because they’d shared their bodies with one another. But because...

“Stop it,” she whispered to herself.

Cate stared at the pictureless frames and tore open the drawer, finding rows of envelopes with her name written across. Her hand trembled as she sifted farther and noticed a stack of turned over photographs at the bottom. She picked the pictures up and flipped them over.

Her lips parted when her eyes met Deacon, because they were not only of him, but of him and another woman. One she knew very well. Blonde pixie-cut hair, wide-set green eyes, freckles. Her. Cate’s heart beat so quickly that she couldn’t breathe, not at all.

The photographs were plucked from her hand. Cate hadn’t even heard him get up from the bed because she was so lost on what was happening. Deacon placed the pictures back into the drawer and shut it.

His gaze met hers, his body trembling as much as hers was.

“Who is your boyfriend, Cate?” he whispered.

The back of her head pounded as she recalled things. She didn’t have an ex-boyfriend—it was only ever Deacon, but he’d been separated from her, because he hadn’t come that day. “You are,” she murmured. The whole time had been a blur—she’d told herself that she didn’t want to think about his name, but the fact was that she couldn’t remember it, or his face, clearly. Until now.

“Do you remember?” His face was filled with so much hope that Cate could barely breathe as her heart pounded and pounded even more.

“Everything.”

His lips pressed against hers and he wrapped his arms around her while she did the same to his waist, only she hugged him harder.
